Become a member
Are you interested in becoming a member? We have a variety of membership levels that require various amounts of commitments of hours, training, and meeting attendance. Read more about our membership categories and what to expect as a member. By joining the Blacksburg Volunteer Rescue Squad, you will be an instrumental part in allowing us to provide emergency medical care and technical operations to the town of Blacksburg, parts of Montgomery County, and across Virginia while making a big difference in your local community.
The first step in joining our squad is to fill out a membership application. You can either mail it our address or email it to personnel@blacksburgrescue.org. The Personnel Committee will review your application for your qualifications and availability. Once submitted, an interview will be scheduled with members of the Personnel Committee.
EMS Division
If you are interested in the emergency medicine side of the squad, we strongly encourage you to schedule a ride-along so that you can get a glimpse into what it takes to be an EMT at our agency. This can be scheduled before or during your application process. If you are accepted as a member but are not already an EMT, we offer the four-month class that will prepare you to take the exam. If you are already a medical provider when accepted, you will go through a 6-month precepting program in which you will complete training on our protocols and daily operations and be tested on a number of different situations in a classroom setting.
Technical Rescue Division
If one or more of the technical rescue disciplines interests you, fill out a membership application. You are welcome to attend one of our monthly meetings on the first Thursday of each month to learn more. If you have experience in one of the areas, you can be checked out and cleared to operate. If you want to learn, we will train you and work through the steps to get from "trainee qualified" to cleared operator.
